One important explanation for this historical nostalgia is that we know we survived these problems, so in retrospect they seem smaller. Otherwise we wouldn't be here.

This probably deserves more than two sentences! I'd imagine that Anthropics dominate the x-risk calculus relevant here.

That said, I do agree with the Enlightenment Now/Factfulness sentiment in general.
