Explorers and scientists visiting Easter Island found a land scattered with large statues, fragments of advanced society, and more, yet they also found a “barren landscape”, with little plants or resources to support agriculture, machines, or any of the human artifacts they found. Why is this? Easter’s End develops a narrative of environmental catastrophe and the efforts of scientists, historians, and more to uncover the history of the island.

Although the landscape of Easter Island in modern day is described as a barren landscape, scientists John Flenley and Sarah King found that the area had formerly been a forest with a wide variety of plants via pollen analysis. This supports the conclusion that human settlement led to environmental decline and consequently a loss of the utility provided by local flora and nutrition by fauna.

Following this loss, inhabitants shifted towards alternative sources of sustenance, including small shellfish, chicken, and cannibalism! The article ironically describes, “With no wood available to cook these new goodies, the islanders resorted to sugarcane scraps, grass, and sedges to fuel their fires.” While the society with a productive ecosystem supported a population of 20,000 people and the technology necessary to construct elaborate statues to signal wealth, it is clear that the later environmental developments led to the subsequent collapse in both population and technology, leaving Easter Island in the state observed by the European scientists and explorers in the second half of the millennium.

The article presents two explanations for the Easter Island peoples’ inability to preserve their environment, that being the long timescales over which deforestation took place, and secondly the island’s elites and economies depending on the value extracted from deforestation. Both are feasible explanations for why Easter Island’s decline was difficult to measure and unable to be stopped, but they also suggest that a similar collapse is unlikely to occur within the modern society of Earth as a whole.

In particular, our modern society has advanced science, extensive recording of the past/trends over time, and many different regions, all of which effectively mitigate the risk of environmental collapse as a result of a lack of awareness of the catastrophe itself.

Next, countering the concern of economic dependence on activities that harm the environment, is the fact that our society, bluntly, isn’t very dependent on environmentally harmful resource extraction. Value produced, especially in the wealthier countries that set international environmental policies, is mostly derived from knowledge work and other goods that depend much less on the physical world around us rather than agriculture, fishing, or mining that dominated Easter Island’s economy, and as a result, our society would both be harmed less by an environmental collapse, but also currently would meet less resistance to mitigating environmental collapse were it to harm short-term economic prospects.

On a lesser scale, this is illustrated by the example provided in the article of PNW loggers: “Our Pacific Northwest loggers are only the latest in a long line of loggers to cry, Jobs over trees!” In fact this example provided actually illustrates why the Island’s concerns are not our own: 53% of forest land is preserved, primarily due to the 1994 Forest Plan, while 100% of forested land gets replanted in Washington. Previously, approximately 72% of old growth forests in the region were forested, which demonstrates that our society has been effective in introducing interventions to address similar environmental concerns as demonstrated by Easter Island.

This isn’t to say that environmental concerns are not important, nor that societal collapse couldn’t arrive from other causes, such as advanced AI systems, pandemics, or cosmic events, or even that a similar event couldn’t happen in a localized manner. Rather, the concern of slow environmental loss leading to societal collapse is likely not a failure mode to be concerned about today.

Footnote: In fact, the article’s example of Somalia proves this: after the collapse of their government, their fishing industry was destroyed by chemical dumping of which there was not sufficient state capacity to prevent.

Your own Somalia footnote actually cuts against your thesis rather than confirming it: the fishery collapse there wasn't caused by slow-timescale unawareness or by elites profiting from the extraction, it happened because state capacity itself disappeared, which suggests governance failure — not information or economic structure — is the real lever, and modern societies are not obviously immune to that. It's also worth noting that Diamond's broader argument (later expanded in his book Collapse) explicitly rejects the idea that any one factor like awareness or elite incentives fully explains Easter's fate; he treats it as a five-factor model, so leaning on just two of his explanations to build your countercase skips over the parts of his argument most directly aimed at rebutting exactly the optimism you're expressing.

Fact check. The specific statistics you cite about Pacific Northwest logging (53% of forest land preserved via the 1994 Northwest Forest Plan, 100% of forested land replanted, and a prior 72% old-growth baseline) don't appear in the article and are shakier than presented: commercial replanting after clearcuts is common but does not equate to restoring old-growth forest, and old-growth Douglas-fir forest in the region is generally estimated to have been reduced to roughly 10-20% of its historical extent, not preserved at anything near the level implied by a 72%-to-53% comparison.
